Safety Harness Spotlight: RGH5 Rescue Safety Harness

The RGH5 is a three-point safety harness, the term “three-point” refers to the number of connection points between the harness and the anchor point. Designed as a confined space access harness, due to the rescue strap. The rescue strap will keep the operative in a near vertical position, which is preferred when recovering an unconscious casualty.

The harness conforms to EN 361 which is a European standard that specifies requirements for full-body harnesses used as a component of personal protective equipment (PPE) against falls from a height.

The additional connection point is the rescue strap, this conforms to EN 1497 which is a European standard which refers to Rescue Harnesses. The requirements of EN 1497 are to provide comfort and safety during a rescue situation. In addition to EN 361, the EN 1497 standard requires additional performance criteria, including dynamic testing at specified maximum user weight, and static strength testing on the rescue attachment point. Additionally, there is a design/suspension test to ensure a satisfactory level of comfort for the rescue.

The RGH5 has steel front and rear attachment points, it also has an additional steel attachment point on the rescue strap. The rescue strap is conveniently designed to attach itself to the shoulder of the harness when not in use, through a hook and loop fastening. It can be used in vertical fall protection if the anchor point is located directly above the operative, e.g. when a fall arrest block is positioned above a ladder.

The harness has easily visible fall indicators with red stitching, which in the event of a fall will pop to show the harness should be taken out of service and destroyed.

The standard colours of the RGH5 are grey and black, they come with a high contrast yellow stitch to make inspecting the harness simple. We do offer a bespoke service, where you can choose your own colours, there is minimum order of 30 harnesses. Use our colour customiser to view your desired colour combination (base harness is the RGH2).

Anti-bacterial coating

The webbing used in the production of the RGH5 has our special RIDGE Protect coating*. This coating offers anti-bacterial protection along with the usual waterproof capabilities.

A little variety

We offer a couple of different variants of the RGH5; RGH5 Glow and RGH5 Super Glow.

RGH5 Glow – manufactured using reflective webbing, this is where the reflective yarn is woven into the main fluorescent yellow webbing. When the reflective strips are hit by light, they give the harness a glow trait which can be seen in low lit areas. This added feature makes this safety harness ideal for working in low lit confined spaces.

All black glow-in-the-dark rescue safety harness

RGH5 Super Glow – this harness was the first of its kind. This has a base black webbing with reflective webbing woven into it, along with glow-in-the-dark yarn. The glow-in-the-dark yarn needs to take in UV light, it will then give off a green glow when in the dark. It also comes with fast fit buckles instead of standard buckles. The fast fit buckles make donning the harness a much quicker operation. This is the ideal safety harness for when quick donning is a must.

Where to use

The RGH5 is the perfect harness for confined space access, due to the rescue strap. Confined space is categorised into low, medium, or high-risk activities, the RGH5 is suitable for all three.

The rescue strap makes access and egress into narrow openings easier.

The RGH5 can also be used for restraint work and fall arrest applications.

If you’re looking for a safety harness for other work at height methods, such as rope access or hands-free work, we offer more advanced safety harnesses with additional connection points and features.
